Franz is a scientific illustrator primarily working in invertebrate paleontology spaces. He frequently collaborates with Cambrian researchers at Harvard University and the University of Cambridge.

On the outreach side, he is a long-term partner of the YouTube channel PBS Eons. He has illustrated for magazines and other media such as Scientific American, Australian Geographic, and Science Friday.

He also regularly works with conservation efforts, illustrating outreach materials such as posters, guidebooks, and handbooks for field workers.

Starting in 2020, he spends his free time rewilding his backyard, documenting the flora and fauna that show up and logging them to the community science platform iNaturalist. On the socials, he is known for being a co-founder of the periodic event #InverteFest, where people celebrate underappreciated invertebrate fauna through art and real life exploration every April, August, and December.
